Job Description
**Cloud \& Database Engineer**
**Location**
Remote (US or Canada)
**Employment Type**
Full\-Time
**Seniority**
Intermediate to Senior
**About the Role**
enChoice provides support, maintenance, and hosting for enterprise\-grade content management platforms
enChoice is looking for a Cloud \& Database Engineer to join our Cloud Engineering team. This is a hybrid role at the intersection of database administration and cloud infrastructure, designed for someone who is equally comfortable optimizing a SQL Server query plan and deploying a containerized workload in OpenShift.
The Cloud Engineering team sits at the center of enChoice’s technical operations, providing services and support across our Managed Services (MS), Digital Transformation Services (DTS), and Product teams. This person will have a defined base of recurring database work, roughly 40–50% of their time, providing structured, predictable ownership of database health across our customer environments and internal systems. The remainder of the role is dynamic, spanning database support tickets, cloud infrastructure work, and cross\-team technical collaboration.
This is not a role for someone who wants to spend their career in SQL Server Management Studio. We want someone who understands data deeply, thinks cloud\-first, and is energized by working across a broad technical surface area in a growing enterprise software company.
**What You’ll Own**
**Recurring Database Operations (40–50%)**
You will have defined ownership of scheduled database maintenance across SQL Server environments supporting Managed Services and DTS customers and internal systems. This includes:
* Weekly and monthly index rebuild and reorganization cycles
* Database health checks: fragmentation, statistics, growth trends, backup validation
* Performance baseline monitoring and alerting configuration
* Storage capacity planning and proactive growth management
* Execution and documentation of standard maintenance runbooks
* Identifying and escalating anomalies before they become incidents
**Database Support \& Escalation**
You will be a go\-to resource for database\-related support tickets and escalations across Managed Services, bringing structured diagnostic thinking to reactive issues:
* Triage and resolve SQL Server performance, connectivity, and integrity issues
* Investigate and resolve hung transactions, blocking chains, and deadlock scenarios
* Support MongoDB Atlas connectivity, indexing, and query performance issues arising from Encore environments
* Provide database input on customer escalations and corrective action responses
**DTS Solution Design \& Development Support**
You will partner with the Development and Technical Services team on database\-related aspects of solution design and application development:
* Review and advise on application\-level queries, stored procedures, and schema designs
* Participate in design reviews where data architecture decisions are being made
* Support query optimization efforts for complex or high\-volume workflows
* Provide database guidance for IBM FileNet to Encore migration engagements, including schema mapping and data pipeline review
* Advise on MongoDB data modeling within the Encore platform context
**Security**
Security is a first\-class concern across everything this role touches. enChoice serves government and healthcare customers with strict compliance obligations, and our Cloud Engineering team is expected to embed security thinking into daily operations — not treat it as a downstream audit activity:
* Apply and enforce least\-privilege access principles across database accounts, cloud service roles, and container workloads
* Ensure encryption at rest and in transit is correctly configured and validated across SQL Server, MongoDB Atlas, and cloud storage contexts
* Maintain and review database audit logging configurations to support compliance evidence requirements (GovRAMP, HIPAA)
* Identify and remediate security misconfigurations in cloud and database environments proactively
* Participate in vulnerability assessments and support remediation of database and infrastructure components
* Apply secure\-by\-default thinking to Kubernetes and OpenShift configurations, including network policies, secrets management, and image security
* Support security reviews for solution designs involving data access patterns, API exposure, or inter\-service communication
**Cloud Infrastructure (Remaining Capacity)**
As a member of the Cloud Engineering team, you will contribute to infrastructure work alongside the team’s broader cloud responsibilities:
* Support and participate in Kubernetes and OpenShift deployments and operations
* Contribute to containerization efforts including deployment configuration and troubleshooting
* Assist with AWS infrastructure tasks including Lambda, ECS, and S3 as needed
* Participate in cloud monitoring, alerting, and observability initiatives
* Support GovRAMP and FedRAMP compliance infrastructure configurations
**Skills \& Qualifications**
The following reflects how we weight each skill area. We are looking for genuine depth in the required areas and intellectual curiosity about the rest.
**Skill Area**
**SQL Server (Required)**
Deep expertise: query tuning, index strategy, transaction management, stored procedures, performance analysis
**Cloud Platforms (AWS) (Required)**
Hands\-on experience with core AWS services; cloud\-first operational mindset
**MongoDB / Atlas (Strongly Preferred)**
Schema design, indexing, query performance; Atlas cloud operations experience a plus
**Oracle (preferred)**
Customer environment exposure; depth less critical than SQL Server
**Kubernetes (Strongly Preferred)**
Deployment, operations, troubleshooting; OpenShift experience directly applicable
**Cloud Security (Strongly Preferred)**
IAM, least\-privilege design, secrets management, encryption at rest/in transit, network security in cloud and container contexts
**OpenShift (Preferred)**
Direct OpenShift experience is a plus; strong Kubernetes candidates will ramp quickly
**Containerization (Preferred)**
Docker, container orchestration, deployment pipelines
**DB2** (Nice to have)
Legacy environment familiarity; useful in FileNet migration contexts
**DynamoDB / AWS Data Services (Nice to have)**
General AWS data services awareness; not a primary workload
**Compliance Contexts (Nice to have)**
Experience with regulated environments (FedRAMP, GovRAMP, HIPAA) is a meaningful differentiator
**Who You Are**
* You think in systems. You understand that a slow query is rarely just a slow query — you investigate upstream causes and downstream effects.
* You are cloud\-native by disposition, not by obligation. You default to managed services, automation, and infrastructure\-as\-code thinking.
* You are proactive, not reactive. You build runbooks, set up alerts, and catch problems before the phone rings.
* You treat security as a design input, not an afterthought. Least privilege, audit logging, and encryption are habits, not checklists.
* You communicate clearly across audiences. You can explain a blocking chain issue to an engineer and the operational risk to a manager.
* You are energized by variety. Half your week is structured and repeatable; the other half is unpredictable. Both appeal to you.
* You are not precious about technology. You use what fits the problem, and you stay current because the ecosystem keeps moving.
