**Job Overview** MAXUS EXCAVATING LLC Remote Construction Controller / Construction Accountant (Heavy Civil / Excavation / Underground Utilities) Location: Remote (Preferred Mountain or Central Time Zone) Employment Type: Full\-Time or Part\-Time (Flexible for the right candidate) Compensation: Competitive and based on experience About Us Maxus Excavating is a growing excavation and underground utility contractor based in Colorado. Our work includes heavy civil construction, underground utilities, earthmoving, demolition, grading, trucking, and commercial site development projects ranging from small service work to multi\-million\-dollar contracts. We are looking for a highly experienced Construction Controller / Construction Accountant who understands the realities of heavy construction operations and can help build strong financial systems, accurate job costing, and real\-time project visibility as we continue to grow. This is NOT a generic bookkeeping position. We are specifically seeking someone with strong construction accounting and job costing experience in excavation, utilities, grading, paving, trucking, heavy civil, or related industries. Responsibilities * Manage and oversee construction accounting operations * Develop and maintain accurate job costing systems * Track project profitability, WIP schedules, and cost overruns * Review and reconcile payroll allocations and labor burden * Monitor AP/AR, retainage, and cash flow forecasting * Assist with budgeting and financial reporting * Create project profitability and operational dashboards * Analyze equipment costs, utilization, fuel usage, and overhead allocation * Support T\&M billing, change order tracking, and subcontractor accounting * Coordinate with ownership, project managers, and office staff * Improve accounting systems, controls, and operational workflows * Assist with month\-end and year\-end closing processes * Work alongside external CPA/tax professionals as needed Qualifications REQUIRED: * Strong experience in construction accounting * Experience with excavation, heavy civil, underground utilities, paving, trucking, or similar industries * Deep understanding of job costing and WIP reporting * Experience with QuickBooks (Online Advanced and/or Enterprise) * Understanding of construction payroll and labor burden * Ability to interpret project financials and identify profit leaks * Strong organizational and communication skills * Self\-motivated and capable of working independently remotely PREFERRED: * Experience with Procore, HCSS, Buildertrend, or similar systems * Experience with equipment\-intensive contractors * Knowledge of T\&M billing and cost\-code structures * Experience building dashboards and KPI reporting What We’re Looking For We want someone who can help us truly understand: * Where we are making money * Where we are losing money * How to improve project profitability * How to tighten operational controls and reporting We are looking for a long\-term fit who takes pride in building systems and helping a growing contractor scale the right way.
