Job Description

**Scientific Writer, Volunteer** **About the Pet Cancer Foundation** The Pet Cancer Foundation’s vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Each year, an estimated 12 million dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer, six times the number of humans affected annually in North America. As our website grows into a trusted resource for pet families, we need skilled scientific writers who can translate complex veterinary and medical research into clear, accurate, and compassionate content. That’s where and how you can help us. **About the position** The volunteer Scientific Writer plays a vital role in transforming complex veterinary and medical research into clear, trustworthy, and empathetic articles that help pet families make informed decisions. You review peer\-reviewed studies and craft accessible content written at a high\-school reading level, while preserving scientific accuracy and PCF’s compassionate brand voice. Working closely with your Team Leader, you contribute to a growing library of reliable resources that support pet owners through assigned topics that may include wellness, behavior, diagnosis, treatment, and beyond. This is an opportunity to use your scientific expertise to create meaningful, public\-facing content that truly makes a difference for pets and their families. ***\*Please leave a note with your application acknowledging your awareness of the volunteer nature of this position. We will only contact and proceed with candidates who confirm their understanding.*** **Duties and Responsibilities** * Review and synthesize peer\-reviewed scientific literature provided in research dossiers to understand key findings, context, and relevance to the assigned topic. * Draft clear, accurate, and engaging articles that translate complex scientific information into plain language suitable for pet owners. * Ensure all content adheres to PCF’s style guide, brand voice, editorial standards, and compassionate tone. * Maintain scientific accuracy and proper contextualization of research results while making the content accessible and actionable for a lay audience. * Incorporate constructive feedback from editors, scientific reviewers, and the Team Leader to refine drafts. * Collaborate effectively with Research Assistants, editors, and the Team Leader throughout the writing process. * Meet established deadlines and communicate proactively about any challenges that may impact timelines. * Contribute suggestions for improving content quality, clarity, or processes when appropriate. **About You** You’re a PhD\-level scientist with a passion for clear communication and a strong ability to make complex research understandable to non\-specialist audiences. You thrive in a collaborative, mission\-driven environment and take pride in producing accurate, empathetic content that helps pet families. You bring: * PhD in a life science, veterinary science, biology, medicine, or closely related field with demonstrated experience translating scientific literature for lay or non\-specialist audiences. * Minimum of 2 first\- or second\-author peer\-reviewed, journal\-published papers. * Experience writing or communicating scientific research for non\-specialist audiences (additional publications preferred). * Strong ability to synthesize and accurately contextualize scientific literature. * Excellent writing, editing, and plain\-language communication skills. * High attention to detail and commitment to scientific accuracy and integrity. * Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a remote team. * Genuine passion for PCF’s mission and a desire to help pet families through clear, trustworthy information. ***\*In addition to requiring Scientific Writers, we are also seeking a Team Leader for Scientific Writers to lead a team. We will be reviewing resumes and asking suitably experienced candidates if supervising other PhD writers is of interest.*** **What we provide you with** Volunteering as Scientific Writer gives you the opportunity to apply your scientific expertise to meaningful work that directly supports pet families facing cancer. You’ll collaborate with a dedicated editorial team, refine your science communication skills for broad audiences, build a portfolio of published public\-facing articles, and contribute to a growing nonprofit resource that makes a real difference in the lives of pets and their families. **Footnotes** * **Community Service:** Please include a short note with your application that clearly states you are willing to volunteer. * **Location:** Fully virtual, open to candidates across Canada and the United States. * **Time Commitment:** 4–6 hours per week on average, with flexibility. * **Learn More:** Visit www.petcancerfdn.org for more about our mission and impact. Job Type: Part\-time Application Question(s): * Please note that Indeed adds a "suggested salary" for all roles when the posting does not include a salary.
