How to find a remote job in 2026

Written against 715 live remote listings from 479 companies. Every figure below is queried from that board when this page is built, not typed in.

The short answer

Apply directly on company career pages and applicant tracking systems rather than through aggregators. Filter for roles that state a salary — only 67% do, and the ones that don't are systematically worse. Then judge the number against the cost of living where you actually plan to live, not where the company is. A $130,000 salary is an entirely different job in Lisbon than in New York.

Where are remote jobs actually posted?

Most remote roles never appear on a job board first. They are published to the company's own applicant tracking system — Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable — and syndicated outward from there. Aggregators pick them up later, often after the strongest candidates have already applied.

This matters more than it sounds. An aggregator listing usually hides the employer behind a redirect, so you cannot research the company, find the hiring manager, or tell whether the role is still open. Of the 715 listings on this board, the ones sourced directly from company ATS boards link straight to the employer. Prefer those.

What does a remote job pay in 2026?

The median advertised salary across 481 listings that disclose one is $130,000. By function:

FunctionMedianRoles
Product$163,08611
Engineering$149,500205
Sales & Business Development$127,50032
Finance & Accounting$125,00015
Design$120,00025
Operations & Business$117,50074
Data & Analytics$116,00017
Marketing$112,50033
Education$97,50010
Healthcare$90,00015
Writing & Content$85,00024

Method: median of the midpoint of each advertised range, across active listings on weightless.work that disclose a salary (n=481). Functions with fewer than 8 salaried listings are omitted rather than reported at low confidence.

Is a high remote salary worth more if you move somewhere cheaper?

Yes, and by far more than most people assume — this is the single largest financial lever in remote work, and it is almost never priced into a job search.

Take the $130,000 median above. In Colombo, where the cost-of-living index is 22 against New York at 100, that salary goes as far as $590,909 would in New York. Against average monthly costs of $650, one year of it covers roughly 17 years of living expenses.

The caveats are real: tax residency, healthcare, visa status and time-zone overlap all change the picture, and some employers location-adjust pay. But the starting arithmetic is worth doing before you accept or decline anything. Our cost-of-living calculator does it across 30 cities, and the city pages show live roles alongside what they are worth locally.

What should you filter on?

  • A stated salary. 67% of listings here disclose one. A role that hides pay is usually either below market or intends to anchor on your current number.
  • Time-zone requirements, not just “remote”. Many roles advertised as remote expect four or more hours of overlap with a specific office. That is a different job from an asynchronous one. 76 listings here are explicitly async-friendly.
  • Employment status. Remote roles are often contractor positions rather than employment, which changes tax, benefits and notice entirely. Check before the final round.
  • Visa sponsorship, if you need it — it is rare and worth filtering for early. Currently 33 listings state it.
  • A direct apply link. If applying means creating an account on an aggregator, the employer may never see it.

How long does a remote job search take?

Longer than an equivalent local search, because the applicant pool is global. The practical response is not to apply more widely but to apply earlier and more specifically: roles get most of their applications in the first 72 hours, so a listing you find in week three is materially harder to win than the same listing in week one. Alerts beat browsing for this reason.
