Part-Time Online Adjunct Instructor – Medical Records & EHR

**Help Adults Build a Career to change their life — Not Just Go To School** Ascend Skills is on a mission to help adults prepare for entry\-level healthcare careers in less than five months through career\-focused training and nationally recognized professional credentials. We are seeking an experienced **healthcare professional with hands\-on experience in medical records and electronic health records (EHR)** to join our team as a **Part\-Time Online Adjunct Instructor**. This is not a traditional college professor role. **We are looking for professionals who know the work and can teach others how to do it.** But just as importantly, we're looking for someone who believes in **our students and our mission.** **Our Students Are Building Their First Career** Our students are **entry\-level job seekers who are working to change their lives.** They aren't returning to college to advance an established career. Many are enrolling with Ascend Skills because **they don't have a career yet** — and they are looking for a realistic path to one. Many are unemployed or underemployed. Some have faced significant personal, financial, educational, or employment challenges. Many have been out of school for years and may not feel confident in a classroom setting. For many students, this program represents much more than another class. **It is an opportunity to build skills, earn a professional credential, secure their first foothold in healthcare, and create a better future for themselves and their families.** These students don't always arrive as highly self\-directed learners. They may need **extra encouragement, reminders, structure, clarification, and support** to stay engaged and on task. At the same time, they need an instructor who will set clear expectations, maintain professional standards, and hold them accountable for doing the work. That's why this role requires more than subject\-matter expertise. **We need instructors who have a heart for this mission — people who genuinely want to help students succeed and believe that a good instructor can change the trajectory of someone's life.** The right instructor knows when a student needs encouragement, when they need additional explanation, and when they need someone to say, *“I know you can do this. Now let's get back on track.”* You will celebrate their progress, challenge them when necessary, and help them see themselves as capable professionals. **This work matters.** **About the Role** You may be a Medical Records Specialist, Health Information Technician, EHR Specialist, Medical Assistant, Medical Billing \& Coding Professional, or another healthcare professional with relevant experience. **Online teaching, training, coaching, or mentoring experience is highly preferred.** You don't need to have spent your career in education. In fact, we're especially interested in professionals who have been in the field and understand what it takes to succeed in a real healthcare workplace. What matters is that you can take your real\-world knowledge and turn it into **clear, practical, engaging instruction for adults who are preparing for their first professional career.** **What You'll Do** * Deliver live, engaging virtual instruction using the approved Ascend Skills curriculum. * Create a supportive, structured online classroom environment that encourages participation and student success. * Prepare students for the **National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS)** certification exam. * Explain medical records, EHR, healthcare documentation, billing, and coding concepts in a clear, practical, and student\-friendly way. * Connect classroom instruction to real\-world healthcare workplace situations. * Help students understand not only **what** to do, but **how the work is actually done in a professional healthcare environment**. * Monitor student attendance, participation, progress, and engagement. * Provide additional encouragement, clarification, and academic support when students need it. * Help students stay focused, engaged, and on task throughout the program. * Set clear expectations and hold students accountable for participation, assignments, attendance, and professional behavior. * Recognize when a student is struggling and provide appropriate support or redirection. * Provide constructive feedback that builds confidence while maintaining appropriate academic and professional standards. * Reinforce professionalism, workplace expectations, and career readiness. * Follow Ascend Skills policies related to attendance, grading, documentation, communication, and academic integrity. * Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all student and team communications. * Participate in instructor onboarding, training, meetings, and curriculum updates as needed. **What You Bring** **Required** * Hands\-on professional experience working with **electronic health records and/or medical records** in a healthcare or medical office environment. * Working knowledge of **EHR systems, healthcare documentation, medical billing, and medical coding**. * Strong verbal and written communication skills. * Ability to explain healthcare concepts clearly to adults with varying levels of experience. * Comfort teaching and communicating in a **live online environment**. * Reliable internet access, current technology, and basic proficiency with virtual meeting technology. * Professionalism, dependability, and a genuine commitment to student success and workforce readiness. * The ability to balance **compassion and accountability** — supporting students while maintaining clear expectations and professional standards. **Highly Preferred** * Previous **online or virtual teaching or training experience**. * Experience teaching, training, coaching, mentoring, or onboarding adults or employees. * NHA **Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS)** certification or another relevant EHR/health information credential. * Experience in medical records, health information, EHR, medical billing/coding, or a closely related healthcare field. * Experience using virtual classroom or learning management platforms such as **Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Canvas, Moodle,** or similar systems. * Experience preparing individuals for professional certification exams. * Degree, additional credential, or documented professional qualification in health information, electronic health records, medical billing and coding, or a related field. **The Ideal Instructor** You don't have to be a career educator. **We're especially interested in professionals who have been in the field and know what it takes to succeed in a real healthcare workplace.** The ideal instructor can take their professional experience and turn it into a learning environment that is: * **Practical** — connected to what students will actually encounter on the job. * **Clear** — able to explain complex concepts in language that adult learners understand. * **Engaging** — able to keep students involved in a live virtual classroom. * **Supportive** — understands that students building their first career may need additional encouragement, structure, and follow\-up. * **Accountable** — willing to set expectations, redirect students, and hold them responsible for their progress. * **Patient** — understands that adults entering a new career may need concepts explained more than once. * **Career\-focused** — committed to helping students become prepared, capable entry\-level healthcare professionals. * **Mission\-driven** — genuinely believes that education and career training can change someone's circumstances. **A Great Fit If...** You might be a great fit for Ascend Skills if you find yourself thinking: *“I know and enjoy this work, and I want to help someone else build a career.”* You enjoy teaching or training others.
