Job Description

**About us** Hola Cultura is a 501(c)(3\) nonprofit community storytelling site, founded in 2011, celebrating Latine arts, culture and humanities in Washington, D.C. and Boston, Mass. **Your role** Translate stories about Latino arts, culture and community for our website and social media. Most of your work will be English to Spanish, with a smaller number of Spanish to English translations. You'll mainly translate recent stories by our SPEL interns, including arts interviews and investigative reporting. You'll also adapt content for social media, where short posts may need rewording rather than word\-for\-word translation, and you may help with occasional organizational communications. For the right candidate, there may also be an opportunity to work on literary pieces, such as poems, short stories or essays. This is optional, and literary pieces will be occasional. This is a remote Volunteer position with $20 weekly stipend. **Responsibilities** * Translate stories as assigned by your editor * Meet weekly deadlines * Preserve the accuracy, voice and tone of the original * Fact\-check and proofread your work before submitting * Flag unclear passages, names or terms to your editor instead of guessing * Follow Hola Cultura's style guidelines and keep unpublished material confidential * Incorporate feedback from your editor, who will review each translation before publication **Who we're looking for** This position is designed for a college student or recent graduate who is building a career in translation. Required * Some college coursework in translation * Native or near\-native writing proficiency in Spanish, with strong reading comprehension and writing skills in English * Strong editing and proofreading skills in both languages * Familiarity with Latine cultures and communities * Ability to preserve tone and voice in journalistic writing Preferred * A university certificate of translation proficiency (completed or in progress) * Prior translation experience, including academic, volunteer or freelance work * Familiarity with translation software (CAT tools) or AP style **Commitment** * 5 hours per week, with about one story per week in production * Fall semester through December, with possible renewal for spring * Fully remote independent work with occasional online meetings. **Tools and technology** You may use machine translation or AI tools only as a reference, and you must disclose their use to your editor. Final translations MUST be your own work. **Professional Development \& Weekly Stipend** * Hands\-on experience in journalistic translation and a look at translation needs in the professional world * Mentorship and editorial feedback from our team * Published work with translator credit on a trusted community journalism site * A chance to try literary translation, if it suits you * A $20 weekly stipend **To apply** Send your resume, cover letter detailing your interest in working with us and your translation experience, and a translation sample of your work to volunteers@holacultura.com. If you don't have a sample, we'll send you a short test passage. Selected candidates will be contacted by October 16\. Job Types: Part\-time, Internship Pay: From $20\.00 per week Benefits: * Professional development assistance Education: * High school or equivalent (Preferred) Work Location: Remote
