Location: Remote | New England network strongly preferred

About Restorative Justice Institute

Restorative Justice Institute (RJI) is a Maine-based nonprofit dedicated to transforming how individuals, organizations, and communities navigate conflict, strengthen relationships, and build healthier systems. Through consulting, training, facilitation, restorative mediation, and capacity building, we partner with schools, workplaces, municipalities, public institutions, and community organizations to address complex challenges and create lasting change.

RJI is entering an exciting period of growth. Having evolved from a primarily grant- and government-contract-supported organization, we are expanding our fee-for-service work with organizational and institutional clients. We're looking for an experienced business development professional to help us build the relationships, partnerships, and revenue pipeline needed to grow this work sustainably. Learn more at www.rjinstitute.org.

About the Position

We are seeking a Fractional Director of Strategic Partnerships \& Growth to lead the development and execution of RJI's institutional business development strategy.

This is a hands-on role for someone who knows how to open doors, build relationships, identify opportunities, and turn promising conversations into paying clients.

We need more than a strategic advisor. We're looking for an experienced, entrepreneurial professional who can independently build and manage a qualified pipeline while helping establish the systems and strategies that will support long-term growth.

You'll work directly with our Executive Director, who will serve as a primary subject-matter expert and partner in client conversations. You'll take ownership of business development execution, from identifying prospects and initiating outreach to nurturing relationships and advancing opportunities.

This is an opportunity to help shape the growth of a mission-driven organization at a pivotal stage.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development \& Revenue Generation

  • Identify, research, and pursue prospective organizational and institutional clients, with an initial focus on New England.
  • Develop and execute targeted outreach strategies to generate qualified leads and client conversations.
  • Build relationships with organizational decision-makers, including executives, HR and organizational development leaders, municipal officials, and institutional partners.
  • Identify opportunities for consulting engagements, organizational training, facilitation, mediation, and longer-term service agreements.
  • Advance opportunities through the sales pipeline, coordinating with the Executive Director on discovery conversations, proposals, and closing.

Strategic Partnerships

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with professional associations, institutional partners, referral sources, and organizations that can expand RJI's reach.
  • Develop partnership opportunities that create meaningful pathways to new clients and sustainable revenue.
  • Represent RJI professionally in introductory conversations and relevant networking settings.

Growth Strategy \& Pipeline Development

  • Develop a practical, repeatable business development strategy aligned with RJI's services, markets, and capacity.
  • Help refine target markets, prospecting approaches, and institutional positioning based on market feedback.
  • Establish and maintain a clear, actionable prospect pipeline and lightweight tracking processes.
  • Recommend and test outreach channels, partnership strategies, and lead-generation activities.
  • Track progress, identify what is working, and adapt strategies accordingly.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Significant experience in B2B business development and nonprofit development, institutional sales, strategic partnerships, or professional services growth.
  • Demonstrated success generating qualified opportunities, developing pipelines, and contributing directly to revenue growth.
  • Experience selling consultative, relationship-driven services rather than transactional products.
  • Strong professional communication, relationship-building, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize high-value activities, and deliver measurable progress with minimal supervision.
  • Comfort working in an entrepreneurial environment with limited infrastructure and significant growth potential.
  • Deep alignment with RJI's mission and values.

Especially Valuable

  • An established professional network in Maine, Massachusetts, or the broader New England region.
  • Experience selling consulting, training, leadership development, organizational development, or other professional services.
  • Existing relationships with corporate, healthcare, higher education, municipal, or nonprofit decision-makers.
  • Experience building a business development function from the ground up.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit revenue development, fundraising, or institutional partnerships.

Restorative justice experience is not required. We're looking for someone who knows how to build business, develop relationships, and generate revenue. We'll provide the subject-matter expertise.

Engagement Structure \& Success Measures

This is an initial 90-day independent contractor engagement, averaging approximately 15–20 hours per month, with flexible scheduling and remote work.

We expect the contractor to take substantial ownership of the work, with weekly strategy conversations and lightweight progress reporting.

During the first 90 days, success will include:

  • A clearly defined target-client strategy and prioritized prospect pipeline.
  • Consistent, targeted outreach and active relationship development.
  • Qualified meetings and partnership conversations with prospective clients.
  • Opportunities advancing toward proposals, engagements, or revenue.
  • A practical, repeatable approach to lead generation that RJI can continue building upon.

We recognize that institutional sales cycles take time. We will evaluate progress based on the quality of the pipeline, meaningful business development activity, opportunities generated, and measurable movement toward revenue.

There is potential to extend or expand the engagement as RJI's business development function grows. As a growing nonprofit, we are open to creative compensation structures that align with our budget and growth goals, including performance-based incentives tied to new client revenue and successful business development outcomes.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume or professional profile and a brief introduction describing your relevant experience.

We are especially interested in hearing about:

  • Specific examples of institutional or B2B pipelines you've built and revenue you've helped generate.
  • Your experience developing new client relationships for consulting or professional services organizations.
  • Your professional network in New England, if applicable.
  • How you would approach building a pipeline for a small, growing nonprofit during an initial 90-day engagement.

We welcome experienced fractional executives, independent business development consultants, and entrepreneurial professionals seeking a meaningful, part-time client engagement.

Help us bring restorative approaches to more organizations, institutions, and communities.
