How Weightless gets and calculates its data
What the numbers on this site are, where they come from, and where they are weak.
Job listings
- Most listings are collected from public job boards and employer postings, not written by us. The employer owns the listing text, and the apply link goes to the employer or the original posting.
- Employers can also post directly on Weightless.
- Listings expire and are removed when they are old or no longer available. A listing can still be closed before we notice, so confirm with the employer before you spend time on an application.
- Always check any job yourself. Be wary of any role that asks for money, a deposit or your passport before an interview. Our remote job guide covers the common signs.
Median advertised salary
- It is calculated only from active listings that state both a minimum and a maximum salary. We take the midpoint of each advertised range and then the median of those midpoints.
- It describes what employers advertise, not what people are paid. Many listings state no salary at all, and those are not in the figure.
- Categories with few salaried listings are noisy. Treat a median built on a small number of roles as a rough guide only.
- See the live figures and sample sizes on the salary index.
Cost-of-living figures
City cost figures, such as the average monthly cost in US dollars, are approximate estimates that we hold for about thirty cities. They are not quotes. Rent, visas and lifestyle vary a lot, so use them to compare cities against each other, then check current prices where you plan to live. We do not currently publish a per-figure source for these estimates.
