Job Description
About the Role
BOSS is looking for a junior software developer who wants to grow into a senior engineering role while helping build and maintain the integrations behind a production platform supporting payroll, invoicing, onboarding, compliance, and other business-critical workflows.
AI-assisted development is central to how we work. You'll use modern coding agents and AI development tools to explore the codebase, implement features, review changes, write tests, and investigate problems. You'll learn how to combine the speed of AI-assisted development with careful engineering judgment, effective validation, and a strong understanding of the underlying systems.
You'll work extensively with third-party APIs and services while gaining experience in code review, testing, debugging, performance, and production operations. You'll help build and maintain reliable integrations, ensure new features fit cleanly into existing workflows, investigate issues when they arise, and strengthen the tools and practices that keep the platform reliable.
This is an opportunity to work closely with company leadership, learn a complex business domain, and see the direct operational impact of your work. As your judgment, system knowledge, and production experience grow, you'll take on progressively greater ownership and develop toward a senior engineering role.
Responsibilities
- Review backend and frontend changes for correctness, maintainability, security, and compatibility with existing workflows.
- Build, maintain, and troubleshoot integrations with payroll, banking, document, payment, email, and other third-party services.
- Work with REST APIs, webhooks, authentication, data mapping, pagination, rate limits, retries, and error handling.
- Design integration workflows to be observable, recoverable, and safe to retry without duplicating financial or operational activity.
- Investigate discrepancies between BOSS and external systems and reconcile failed or incomplete transactions.
- Use AI coding agents to investigate the application, develop solutions, generate tests, and accelerate routine engineering work.
- Review and validate AI-generated changes for correctness, security, maintainability, and unintended effects.
- Improve the instructions, documentation, context, and feedback that help AI tools produce more reliable results.
- Identify inefficient database behavior, including N+1 queries, missing indexes, unnecessary work, and other performance risks.
- Test changes across related workflows rather than evaluating features only in isolation.
- Help diagnose production issues across the application, database, background workers, integrations, and deployment environment.
- Develop well-scoped production fixes and, with appropriate review, help deploy them safely.
- Add practical automated tests and repeatable manual checks for critical behavior.
- Review schema and data changes for deployment, rollback, and production-data risks.
- Monitor application behavior and improve logging, documentation, and incident-response procedures.
- Document defects, technical risks, and recommended corrections in clear language.
- Learn the business rules behind payroll, invoicing, onboarding, and related financial workflows.
- Work directly with company leadership to turn product ideas into reliable, supportable software.
Required Qualifications
- Foundational experience with Python and web application development through professional work, internships, education, or substantial personal projects.
- Experience consuming web APIs and working with HTTP, JSON, authentication, and asynchronous workflows.
- Practical experience using AI coding tools while retaining the ability to understand, test, and explain the resulting code.
- Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL, preferably PostgreSQL.
- Ability to follow application code and database queries methodically while investigating a failure.
- Familiarity with Git-based development and code review.
- Understanding of common web security, data-integrity, and error-handling concerns.
- A methodical debugging approach and willingness to escalate when the cause or safest repair isn't yet clear.
- Clear written and verbal communication, especially when describing risk or challenging an implementation.
- Willingness to learn a mature application with interconnected business rules and legacy behavior.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Django or a similar Python web framework.
- Experience with TypeScript, JavaScript, or SvelteKit.
- Experience building or supporting third-party integrations, webhooks, scheduled synchronization jobs, or data-import pipelines.
- Familiarity with OAuth, API keys, request signing, idempotency, rate limiting, and resilient retry strategies.
- Familiarity with Linux production environments, Nginx, Gunicorn, background-job systems, and Vercel.
- Experience investigating slow queries, N+1 behavior, worker exhaustion, or other application-performance issues.
- Experience writing automated tests or introducing tests into an application with limited existing coverage.
- Familiarity with production deployments, rollback procedures, backups, monitoring, and incident response.
- Experience designing effective prompts, project instructions, or agent workflows for software development.
- Knowledge of payroll, accounting, banking, invoicing, employer-of-record services, or financial operations.
What Success Looks Like
In the first several months, you'll build a working understanding of the application's major workflows and external services, contribute to a consistent review and validation process, and learn to diagnose common integration and production failures with support. As you grow, you'll take increasing ownership of integrations, reviews, incident response, system design, and technical decision-making. The long-term goal is for this role to develop into a senior engineering position with broad knowledge of the platform and business.
Role Boundaries
This position supports code quality and production reliability but won't initially be the company's sole owner of architecture, security, infrastructure, or incident response. Significant production changes and high-risk incidents will have a defined escalation path and support from the designated technical owner. Those boundaries can expand deliberately as the developer gains experience.
Pay: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour
